Rotational Lease: Providing High Availability in a Shared Storage File System
نویسندگان
چکیده
Shared storage file systems consist of multiple storage devices connected by dedicated data-only network and workstations that can directly access the storage devices. In this shared-storage environment, data consistency is maintained by lock servers which use separate control network to transfer the lock information. Furthermore, lease mechanism is applied to cope with control network failures. However, when the control network fails, participating workstations can no longer make progress after the lease term expires. In this paper we address this limitation and present a method that enables networkpartitioned workstations to continue file operations even after the control network is down. The proposed method works in a manner that each workstation is rotationally given a predefined lease term periodically. We also show that the proposed mechanism always preserves data consistency.

Safe Caching in a Distributed File System for Network Attached Storage
In a distributed file system built on network attached storage, client computers access data directly from shared storage, rather than submitting I/O requests through a server. Without a server marshaling access to data, if a computer fails or becomes isolated in a network partition while holding locks on cached data objects, those objects become inaccessible to other computers until a locking ...

The Lustre File System architecture supports Object Based Storage. It separates data and metadata path of file system operations. An outage of the Metadata Server could considerably degrade the system performance. Providing a backup Metadata Server will increase the availability of Lustre File System to 99.9%. The backup server monitors the primary server over the network and shared storage to ...

By merging network and channel interfaces, resulting interfaces allow multiple computers to physically share the storage devices in storage area network (SAN). In SAN, computers service local file requests directly from shared storage devices. Direct device access eliminates the server machines as bottlenecks to performance and availability. Communication is unnecessary between computers, since...

Diskless high-performance computing (HPC) systems utilizing networked storage have become popular in the last several years. Removing disk drives significantly increases compute node reliability as they are known to be a major source of failures. Furthermore, networked storage solutions utilizing parallel I/O and replication are able to provide increased scalability and availability. Reducing a...
